about the artist

Fern Liberty Kallenbach Campbell (*1995 in New York) lives and works in Halle Saale, Germany. Fern studied communication design at Burg Giebichenstein and completed her bachelor's degree in 2021 with a focus on illustration under the tutelage of Prof. Georg Barber. In 2021 she received the Giebichenstein Design Prize for the best idea/concept. In 2023 she completed her diploma in textile art, in the class of Prof. Caroline Achaintre. In 2024, Fern will participate in the International Fellowship at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles. Fern's work has been exhibited in Berlin, Halle, Leipzig, Braunschweig, Erfurt, Prague, Moscow, Antwerp, Geneva and London, among others.

Through the medium of fiber art Fern manifests her psyche and satirical
view of he surroundings, simultaneously exploring the correlation between these two realms. She uses her work to express our Zeitgeist filled withspam and cyber sex, substance abuse and excess, toxic relationships and feminine divinity. In a naive style, a childlike mix of pop- and outsider art, Fern processes her life experiences and depicts personal anecdotes in the form of tapestry. Fern‘s most recent work focuses on the hardships of self-set boundaries towards the people loved most. Here, the boundaries between good and evil become blurred, as well as the boundaries between self-medication and addiction, chaos and harmony. The dining table is a recurring element in her works. Fern explores her personal and digital realities and engages with them through carpet tufting, punching and textile applique. She appreciates the fast and passionate work these techniques allow her to do. They enable her to apply lines, structures and forms intuitively, spontaneously and completely freely.
